Having over 20 days of sub-zero temps really tests my loyalty to living in the Midwest. I try reminding myself that the winter makes me appreciate the Spring and Summer more than if I had nice weather all the time. I believe that mentality is just a survival mechanism I use to get through our harsh winters.
The kids and I have tried to make the best of the arctic situation by playing fun games and dressing up. My daughter, Madeline, had us all dress up in our Sunday best and drink hot tea. My son created and destroyed many Lego creations and then joined the tea party as the resident pirate.
As a photographer, I do like challenging myself to capture beauty in the everyday moments of childhood. I feel cooped up being inside for more than a day, but it does have a way of removing distractions. I do enjoy playing with my kids but sometimes get so caught up in my long to-do list and errands. As moms, we frequently chase perfection and forget the blessings of everyday moments with our children. I cherish the simplicity and realness in everyday photos just as much if not more than the pictures of my kids dressed to the nine’s looking like they could model for J.Crew Kids.
